Mr. Karl A. Smith
May 19, 1924 - February 17, 2009
Karl Albert Smith of Apalachin Karl Albert Smith was born in the family house in Falls, PA on May 19, 1924. He married the former Mary Brown Bennett on Feb 14, 1947 in Mill City, PA. He passed on February 17, 2009 at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford, NY after a long illness.
He was predeceased by his parents Gottfried and Emilie Smith; sisters, Amelia Robinson and Freda Nemec and brother Frederick.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years Mary Bennett Smith; three sons, Mark (wife Laurie, and son Andrew) of Hewlett Neck; Randy (wife Gail, and daughter Mikki) of Apalachin; and Gregg (wife Heidi, and son Alexander, and daughter Taryn) of Chesapeake, VA; brothers-in-law, Ward Bennett and William (Kate) Bennett; sister-in-law Ann Bennett; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Karl was an Army Air Force veteran of WWII serving as an Aerial Engineer in the China Burma India Theatre attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was a member of the Southern Tier BASHA and VFW.
He was a retired switchman with NY Telephone Company after 38 years of service.
He was a Past Master and 42 year member of Round Hill Lodge #533 F. & A.M., a member of the Valley of Binghamton Scottish Rite Bodies, Past Patron of Round Hill O.E.S. Chapter #104, Past Royal Patron of George F. Johnson Court Order of Amaranth, Past High Priest Western Broome Royal Arch Masons, Past Chapter Dad for Round Hill DeMolay and was named Mason of the Year in 1977.
He was a founding member of Holy Counselor Lutheran Church, Past Cub Scout Den master, Past President AYAA Youth Baseball League, all in Apalachin.
Funeral Information
The family will receive friends at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton on Saturday, February 21st from 10am until the time of the Masonic and Memorial Services at 11am. The family will also receive friends at the Endicott Masonic Temple, 403 E. Main Street, Endicott following the services.
