Obituary for Michael Melnyk

Michael Melnyk, 103, died peacefully Saturday, January 13, 2018 in Mt Vernon, Illinois surrounded by family.

Michael leaves three children, Olga (Ed) of Mt Vernon IL, Oleh of Winnemucca, NV and Alex (Ann) of Overland Park, KS; 7 grandchildren (Julie, Michael, Emily, Gregory, Anthony, Christopher, Daniel) and 3 great grandchildren (Elle, Annie, Zai) . He leaves nieces and nephews and their families who always held great meaning in his life. Orest Melnyk has not only been a nephew but a close and wonderful friend. His other immediate nieces and nephews include Ihor, Orysia, Christine and Marusia.

Michael was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Paraska and his brother, Gregory and his wife, Jaroslava.

Michael’s 103 years was full of history, life lessons, and hard work but mostly of love. He loved his family and was a great role model as a husband, father and grandfather.

Michael and his beloved wife, Paraska left the Ukraine in 1944 heading for a better life in America with only the clothes on their backs and bread in their pocket. Two of their children, Oleh and Olga, were born in Austria while their youngest, Alex, was born in the states. There were so many stories within the story of his escape from the communist to America. Michael wrote a book in 1999 telling all the details of this escape. The book was titled “Unforgettable Memories” that has been shared to many throughout the years.

Upon arrival in America in 1949, he worked on a farm close by his brother, Gregory’s farm and the two families began a close and special relationship that thrives today with the “younger generation”.

After six years, Michael bought his own farm in Montrose PA. He, his wife and children farmed for more than 40 years before retiring after his wife died in 1993. His hard work sent three children to college which provided them with the life they have today and they remain grateful for this opportunity.

After retirement, Michael lived either close by or with his son Alex and his family in New York, Texas and Kansas. He traveled with them on many vacations and cruises. He also made a trip back to the Ukraine with his son, Oleh. In his own words, Michael said many times, “I never dreamed of such a life”.

The last five years, Michael lived with his daughter, Olga, in Mt Vernon IL. Even up until two months before he passed away, Michael continued to walk outside every day. To him, that was his job. He celebrated his 103 rd birthday in Mt Vernon in April 2017 with many family members and friends. The local TV station and newspaper came out, did a story on his life and captured his love of walking outdoors.

Michael never understood why he was so blessed to live such a long and healthy life but there is no doubt that it was to bless and enrich the lives of his family and friends.

The family will receive friends at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton on Friday 4-7pm where a prayer service will be provided by Father Teodor B. Czabala Jr. at 6:30pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday 9:30am at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home and 10am at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church 230 Ukrainian Hill Road, Johnson City where a Divine Liturgy will be celebrated Father Czabala.
