Obituary for Mrs. Martha Borsuk Hriciga

Martha Borsuk Hriciga of Binghamton

Martha Borsuk Hriciga, the heart of our family, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2017, in the house she lived in for over 70 years. She was born in Blakely, Pennsylvania, on July 11th, 1925, to Martha (nee Holod) and Patrick Borsuk. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Nicholas, sisters Catherine Turko and Natalie Borsuk, brothers Michael Borsuk and Peter Borsuk, and grandson Alan Crabb. She graduated from Binghamton Central High School, and soon after began working at Columbia Mutual Insurance. After raising her children, she returned to work, first at IBM Endicott. From there she began work at Lourdes Hospital, where she was the patient placement coordinator until her retirement. She was greatly respected for the work that she did there for over 20 years, where she met co-workers who became lifelong friends. Martha was loved by all who knew her. She had an uncanny ability to touch peoples lives. She appreciated every day she lived, and took great joy in life, especially in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was caring, kind, supportive, and had a delightful sense of humor. She was known for her mugs, her many (many) purses, as well as her fashion-forward nails. She loved all kinds of music, from show tunes to Lawrence Welk to Keith Urban to Bon Jovi to Andrea Bocelli. She loved her books, her flowers, and the birds who flocked to her yard. She loved traveling and the beach, visiting Hawaii, Jamaica, France, Switzerland, and many places in the U.S. Of all places, however, her favorite place to be was in church. Being in church brought her great serenity. She cherished her relationship with Father Ilya and Matushka Julia. She is survived by her children, Nicholas (Kathleen) Hriciga, Jr., Mardi (Pierre) Malherbet, Valerie Hriciga, and Cathy (Mike) Schackman. She also survived by her adoring grandchildren, Damian (Alison) Hriciga, Marisa Crabb and John Syron, Veronica Searles Quick and Eamon Quick, Colin Searles, Nicholas Hriciga and Shannon Buchanan, and Caitland (Louis) DiSanza. She leaves behind her precious great-grandchildren Bodhi Hriciga and Alexander Crabb. She was the best Baba in the world. Mom had many dear friends: Dottie Houlihan, a friend for over 70 years, Cathy Bocinski, Donna Guilfoyle, Jeanne and Roger Meland, Gary Reynolds, her former son-in-law, Susan Syquia, and her newly-found friend and caregiver, Raffaela Rossi. For whatever part you played in Moms beautiful, long life, we thank you. Mother, Mommy, Mama, Mom, Baba - we love you forever.
